Merchant Spotlight: Shanghai Red Restaurant

A decades-long friendship between Jose Rosado, Javiel Rodriguez and Tony Olavarria, has blossomed into a perfect partnership for the three owners of the district’s newest restaurant, Shanghai Red. “I was sitting on Javiel’s ‘Golden Chair’ getting my hair cut and we thought, Who better to open a restaurant than us?” said Rosado. Rodriguez and Rosado met at Rodriguez’s barber shop over four decades ago where they formed a long lasting friendship. Rodriguez is a successful businessman and founder of Beyond Barber Academy, the first barber training school in the Bronx. Rosado is a savvy businessman in his own right, having established some of Manhattan’s most iconic Latin music nightclubs of the 70s, 80s and 90s.

The third partner in the trio, Olavarria, also has a history of sitting on the “Golden Chair” since his childhood. Olavarria’s knowledge of and experience in the restaurant business was the final piece of the puzzle that set in motion a unique opportunity to showcase a tasteful blend of Latin and Asian cuisine. “We were looking to fill a unique niche in the neighborhood,” he stated. “Our restaurant offers food choices from many Latin and Asian countries. There aren’t many places in the Bronx where you can choose from a menu that offers both sushi and churrasco,” he said.

The restaurant’s impressive cocktail menu offers 14 signature cocktails and includes Asian beer. As they created this unique menu, it was important to them to work with several well-known mixologists to develop a one-of-a kind signature cocktail menu.

While Shanghai Red is currently serving customers, the partners celebrated their official grand opening Wednesday, April 24th. Their goal is to make the restaurant one of the top restaurants in the Bronx. Boasting 4,000 square feet of space, the restaurant will accommodate a DJ, a private room for party rentals, seating for 123 guests, and an outdoor eating area. A Sunday Brunch menu is also in the works.

Located at 127 Westchester Square, Shanghai Red’s owners are highly satisfied with the restaurant’s location. Shanghai Red is open for business after 4 p.m. on Tuesday - Sunday (closed Monday). Happy Hour cocktails available from Tuesday - Friday, 4 - 8 p.m.
